Apr. 22, 2001: Spring Picnic in Tucson

Saturday's stormy weather was a thing of the past, and Sunday dawned fresh and sunny. Ramadas 14 and 15 in the Gene Reid Park in the middle of Tucson were spacious and inviting. Lithuanian flag was waving in the breeze, Lithuanian music was playing on the loudspeaker, Lithuanian food and cold drinks were being served, and some 80 guests arrived from all parts of Arizona and from as far away as Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was a great turnout, a great opportunity to meet old friends and to make new ones. It was not all frivolity, however, and many letters supporting Lithuania's invitation into NATO were signed and mailed to the President and to our U.S. senators and representatives.

As always, many contributed to the success of this picnic. Our thanks go to Maryte and Rimtis Tallat-Kelpsa for preparing the wonderful feast of kugelis, sausages, and sourkraut; to the many ladies that contributed cakes and cookies; to Dr. Violeta Juodakis for collecting signatures on NATO letters; to Aldona Gencius and Severina Vanagunas for selling lottery tickets; to Juozas Budinavicius and Danguole Balceris for running the lottery; to Don Adamavich for tending the bar; to Aldona Vaitkus for being the cashier; and to the many others who helped out.

Feb. 21, 2001: Hike to Picacho Peak

A small group (4 from Phoenix, 2 from Tucson, 1 from Casa Grande, and 2 visitors from Iowa) got together for a hike on the Hunter Trail of the Picacho Peak State Park. The peak has been used as a landmark by travelers for more than 150 years. Although rather short, only 2 miles to the peak, the hike is strenuous, especially from the saddle to the peak. There are steel cables to hold on to while one is scrambling on what looks like a rather vertical climb. In some places it could be called bouldering. One starts at an elevation of about 2000 feet and goes to 3,374 feet at the very peak. The views are fantastic. If you can get away for a day midweek or on the weekend - do it soon, while the popies are still in bloom.

To discuss this or future hikes please contact Gil or Cas at 623-933-0547 or [email protected].

Feb. 11, 2001: Lithuanian Independence Day Commemoration

Our Lithuanian Independence Day commemoration started with a Lithuanian Mass celebrated by Archbishop Paul Marcinkus at the beautiful St. Elizabeth Seton Parish church in Sun City, Arizona. Soloist Christine Lindquist contributed to the festive mood in the church with her beautiful rendition of Ave Maria.

After the Mass everyone moved to the adjacent parish hall, where the commemoration continued. After a brief welcome by Rimantas Vaitkus, our m.c. Danguole Balceris took over the running of the program. The first half of the program began with the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner, the invocation by the pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton parish, Rev. Franklin L. Bartel, and a minute of silence to honor those who gave their lives for Lithuania's freedom. Then Juozas Budinavicius and Ruta Sweetsir read Lithuania's Declaration of Independence of February 16, 1918, and the Independence Re-establishment Act of March 11, 1990. Joana Ziuraitis read the proclamation by the governor of Arizona Jane Hull declaring February 16th as Lithuanian Day in Arizona. This was followed by Antonija Petrulis reading the Lithuanian-American Community's resolution concerning the invitation of Lithuania into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 2002. The resolution was unanimously accepted by all those present. At this point our guest speaker, Vytautas Vidugiris from California, was introduced and he described the changes that he observed in Lithuania during the past decade.

The second half of the program consisted of six Lithuanian folk dances performed by Arizona's own dance group "Saule" ably directed by Dalia Motiejunas, and Lithuanian poetry beautifully recited by Aldona Gencius. The program ended with the Lithuanian National anthem. After the program everyone was treated to snacks, desserts, punch, and coffee, and a beautiful exhibit of traditional Lithuanian weaving and amber jewelry by Milda Kvedaras.

A special thank you goes to Mary Gallagher for being our ambassador to Archbishop Paul Marcinkus and pastor Franklin Bartel as well as making all the arrangements for the church service and the hall. We are grateful to the ladies of our community for preparing and contributing the wonderful food: Carol Adamavich, Siga Eidukonis, dr. Violeta Juodakis, Dalia Motiejunas, Ruta Motiejunas, Antonija Petrulis, Maryte Tallat-Kelpsa, and Aldona Vaitkus. We are also grateful to Rasa, Severina Vanagunas, and Rimtis Tallat-Kelpsa for manning the donations desk.

Dec. 3, 2000: Christmas Tree Luncheon

St. Elizabeth Seton Parish hall was decked out with red and green Christmas decorations, white tablecloths, 2 Christmas trees with typically Lithuanian ornaments made of straw, flags, a table with 12 Lithuanian Christmas Eve dishes, a buffet with hot food, cold food, desserts and coffee, a bar with refreshments, a work area for making straw ornaments, and a throne for Santa. Christmas music was playing on the stereo. But best of all, 102 people, young and old, from near and far, with Christmas spirit in their hearts came to eat, socialize, and celebrate Lithuanian Christmas customs and traditions. Older folks shared reminiscences of past Christmases. Youngsters labored on straw ornaments and were rewarded by Santa Claus with small gifts. It was truly a memorable afternoon for all.

Our community is blessed with many who volunteered their energies and talents to make this event possible. Our special thanks goes to the following contributors: Mary Gallagher for getting us this wonderful hall and for starting the luncheon with a prayer; Ona Adomaitis for setting the Christmas Eve supper table display and a Christmas tree decorated with real straw ornaments; Dalia Motiejunas, Ruta Motiejunas, and Aldona Vaitkus for preparing the hot food; Aldona Katilius, Aldona Klemka, Rita Martinaitis, Gilanda Matonis, Audra Motiejunas, Antonija Petrulis, Maryte Tallat-Kelpsa, and Aldona Vaitkus for preparing the cold food and desserts; Audrone Bartys, Gilanda Matonis, and Antonija Petrulis for preparing and decorating the hall; Juozas Budinavicius for tending our bar; Aldona Katilius, Rita Martinaitis, Antonija Petrulis, Maryte Tallat-Kelpsa, and Aldona Vaitkus for tending the buffet; Ona Adomaitis, Elena Barcas, and Ilona Budinavicius for demonstrating the construction of straw ornaments; Don Adamavich for being our Santa Claus; and Danguole Balceris for being our master of ceremonies.

Nov. 12, 2000: Concert

Ausra Liutkute ([email protected]), possibly the best young soprano in Lithuania today, performed famous arias from operas and operettas, and selected songs by Lithuanian composers at a single appearance in Glendale, Arizona. Ausra Liutkute was recently the unanimous first place winner from a field of 17 in a singing competition sponsored by the Lithuanian Academy of Music and came to us after very successful concerts in Chicago and Detroit. Ausra's voice is truly world class and she has a very promising future on concert and opera stages around the world. Olga Konkova ([email protected]), a very talented young pianist from Lithuania, accompanied Ausra's singing and performed solo.

For making this wonderful concert possible we are greatly indebted to Mrs. Rima Reklaitis, who not only made all the arrangements on very short notice, but also took Ausra and Olga into her home during their stay in Phoenix.

Nov. 11, 2000: Hike in the White Tank Mountain Park

Originally scheduled for November 4th and delayed by one week because of rain, the hike in the White Tank Mountain Park on November 11th was blessed with blues skies, refreshing breezes, and wonderful vistas. The one-day hike started at Mesquite Canyon trailhead, covered a distance of approximately 7 miles, reached altitudes of about 2200 feet, and ended at the Ford Canyon trailhead.

We are very grateful to Gilanda and Casimir Matonis ([email protected]) for exploring and testing the trails in the White Tank Mountain Park, and for organizing and leading this memorable hiking expedition.

Oct. 29, 2000: Fall Picnic in North Phoenix Mountain Park

Our fall picnic at the Yavapai Pavilion of North Phoenix Mountain Park was a great success. It drew 86 people from the entire Phoenix metro area, Casa Grande, Tucson, and from as far away as Sierra Vista. The weather was perfect, the Lithuanian food was delicious, the lottery was exciting, the music was entertaining, and the dancing of the "Saule" folk dancers when joined by our many guests was a great finale.

None of this would have been possible without the help of the many members of our community who brought delicious pastries, a variety of interesting items for the lottery, and recordings of Lithuanian music. Our special thanks goes to Dalia Motiejunas and Aldona Vaitkus for preparing the hot food; to Vytas Reklaitis for providing the cold drinks; to Ruta, Audra and Christopher Motiejunas for decorating the picnic site and tables; to Aldona Gencius and Veronica Paulionis for selling lottery tickets; to Juozas Budinavicius for running the lottery; and to Danguole Balceris for making everyone feel welcome.
